The God created this universe from nothing...from zero...from shoonya...But, this zero or Shoonya is not the numerical zero used in counting and mathematics, but it refers to nothingness or the void. Everything begins with zero and ends with zero. Everything evolved out of the void and everything will ultimately dissolve into the void. Zero or nothingness holds the key to everything. If we apply the concept of nothingness to our birth-death cycle, we will see that we were nothing before our birth, and we don’t know where we will be after our death. When we approach the fag end of our life and look back, we see our contribution as nothing compared to uncountable activities going on in this world. What we see when we look back on our yesteryears is nothing but a dream that has consumed our lives and pushed us in a void. So, the journey of life begins with a zero and ends with a zero. In other words, life comes full circle with Zero.
And so also with spirituality. Our spiritual journey begins with zero. Before starting our spiritual journey, we have to shun our desires, emotions, and physical belongings which we always carry with us in our heads or on our minds. We have to become a zero ego-wise, emotion-wise, and literally. The starting point of knowledge is ignorance. So, we begin with a zero. As we grow in spiritual knowledge, we discover that knowledge is so vast, like an ocean, and we are not even a drop in that ocean. Again, we come to realize that we are zero...that we are nothing.
With the above background in mind, it can be logically construed that the universe is a big Zero, a maha shoonya, a big void or nothingness and abode to other zeroes emanating
from each activity taking place in this world. Maha Shoonya is also important since the Foundation shall propagate Shoonya Sadhna for the benefit of humanity, and the sadhna technique shall be aimed at exploring nothingness in its process.
In this context, the process of the spiritual world is no different from the process of our physical world. Just imagine: if I am 50 years old, where was I before 50 years? I originated in a sperm nine months before that, and my mother nourished me for nine months and ushered me into this world. But, where was I before those nine months? Nowhere! What was I before those nine months? NOTHING.
So, literally speaking, I was born out of nothing just as the universe was born out of nothing. Then my mother nursed and nurtured me as I grew. In the process, I set goals for myself and achieved some of them. But, with experience, I learnt that what I achieved was nothing because the world is so vast. One day I will grow old and I will leave this world or Mrityulok as we call it. Where do I go from here? Nobody knows! And, what am I going to be after my death? NOTHING. In simple terms, I would become zero again. So, the journey of my life begins with a zero and ends with a zero. In other words, life comes a full circle with zero.
So also with spirituality. Our spiritual journey begins with zero. We have to renounce or discard our desires, emotions, and other physical longings and belongings, the burden of which we constantly carry in our heads or on our minds. We have to become ego-free, emotionally and literally. We must become a zero before we set out in quest of spiritual knowledge.
The starting point of knowledge is ignorance. So, we begin with a zero. As we grow in spiritual knowledge, we discover that knowledge is so vast, like an ocean, and we are not even a drop in that ocean. Again, we come to the realisation that we are zero...that we are nothing.
When we begin meditating, we zero in on something and focus all our attention on that thing with full concentration. With constant and concerted efforts, we hone our attunement to meditation. The ultimate stage is when we can focus on nothing..on zero...on shunya.
It is humbling as well as an elevating experience when we achieve that. Whether it is our physical journey or a spiritual journey, we begin with a zero and end up with a zero.
Our journey comes full circle with a zero. Perhaps that is why the shape of zero is like a full circle!
Our physical existence begins in nothingness before birth and returns to it after death. No matter how significant our achievements may seem, they are minute in the vast expanse of the universe. Life, when viewed from beginning to end, is a cycle that starts with zero and ends with zero — a full circle of existence rooted in the concept of nothingness.
Spiritual growth mirrors the life cycle. It begins with the conscious shedding of ego, desires, and attachments — becoming a zero in every aspect. As one gains spiritual insight, the vastness of true knowledge reveals our insignificance. The deeper we go, the clearer it becomes: we are nothing but a speck in an infinite ocean. True spiritual awakening is the realization of our nothingness.
The universe itself is born from nothing — the maha shoonya, or great void. Just like individuals, all of creation originates and dissolves into this nothingness. Shoonya Sadhna, a meditative practice focusing on the experience of nothingness, reflects this cosmic truth. Whether through birth, death, or spiritual transcendence, all journeys begin and end in zero — completing the eternal circle.
In today’s fast-paced, stress-filled world, many of us feel lost, caught in the struggle to simply survive. But life is meant for more than just survival. It’s meant for peace, joy, purpose, and spiritual growth.
